Age verification isn’t state censorship. I suppose it could be a way to limit anonymous speech. That isn’t a Right where I am from (nor is ‘free’ speech). I doubt anonymous speech is a Right anywhere.I have no doubt it’s absolutely technically feasible in a way that infringes on no one’s privacy. Ultimately though, yes, it could be abused by bad actors. Like everything else in civilisation we need some balance of enforcement to deal with those people.

@mikeinthecloud @Em0nM4stodon The tribal opposition to "AI" is grossly uninformed regarding what "AI" even is. The LLM works by being an index on a corpus, not copies. For an LLM to be "trained" on a work, is to say that the work is statistically analyzed in comparison to every other work, not to say that the work itself is stored. People do it all the time, use other people's ideas without attribution. There is not enough time in the universe to give everyone due credit. Therefore the key, in my opinion, is to ensure that no one goes wanting, that everyone gets what they need. With no reason to complain, in theory, we could all share what we know with each other, and still be happy.

I will note that authoritarianism is on the rise, which fits your argument, and the correlation that I pointed out may not be causation. Maybe AI has little to do with it. But looking through all the companies involved with the verification in the original post, AI is at least involved.I don't know. What I do know is that the effect sucks.

@Em0nM4stodon Fortunately, here in Italy our privacy laws are still quite strict: a device that records people without consent — especially with facial recognition — wouldn’t be allowed to operate freely today.Let’s hope our institutions keep defending this approach and don’t get swayed by foreign models pushing for ever‑more invasive surveillance. Privacy is a fundamental right, and it deserves to be protected with conviction.

The issue, as is often the case, is how you police such a platform?There's a LOT of money to be made in _pretending_ to be a human, especially on a platform with a reputation for not having AI/Bots on it. Sneak a politics bot into that platform and you get outsized influence.Even demanding ID from all users won't prevent fakers. There's too much profit motive in circumvention.
