AI Controls (formally 'kill switch') are landing in today's Firefox Nightly, and will land with Firefox 148 later this month. -
Thanks to @leanderlindahl, I was alerted to a monthly event that MastoCanucks should participate in.@Rick_d_card @ElbowsUpforDigitalSovereignty I used Protonmail for a few years before switching to FastMail. Proton may be the best choice for privacy, but itβs much worse feature-wise. I may change my mind in the future again, but the important thing is both are better than Gmail.
Bear in mind the Proton CEO has aligned himself with right wing politics recently. This was the reason for me to move - if I canβt trust the company, might as well get better features elsewhere.

Thanks to @leanderlindahl, I was alerted to a monthly event that MastoCanucks should participate in.@ElbowsUpforDigitalSovereignty much better than Gmail, zero AI bullshit

Thanks to @leanderlindahl, I was alerted to a monthly event that MastoCanucks should participate in.@ElbowsUpforDigitalSovereignty Iβve done that a few years ago. My official email lives in FastMail now (Australian company)

Should citizens of your country that live elsewhere have the right to vote?@evan @renata @mayintoronto Also I think people who describe themselves as βBrasileiros no exteriorβ donβt quite embrace the country they moved to. One could write many academic papers about his sort of thing!
-
Should citizens of your country that live elsewhere have the right to vote?@evan @renata @mayintoronto I describe myself as both, depending. I feel more Canadian these days because I never felt 100% Brazilian even before I moved. Also itβs been 16 years and I donβt go back that much. When Iβm there I feel like a gringo visitor most of the time - and here Iβm slightly exotic.
-
Should citizens of your country that live elsewhere have the right to vote?@evan But yes, e.g. my mom says βFabio immigrated to Canada, heβs an immigrant thereβ
-
Should citizens of your country that live elsewhere have the right to vote?@evan I get it, but everything is related. Brazil is a weird place, worth visiting.
-
Should citizens of your country that live elsewhere have the right to vote?@evan Thatβs because most Brazilians know itβs not one of the rich countries but itβs also not in the poor country bucket (there are many places that are worse). So, many people want to leave, but those who canβt feel validated by people who choose to come.
Brazilian identity is a very complex feeling.
-
Should citizens of your country that live elsewhere have the right to vote?@evan Yes to all! Thereβs also a thing about βimigranteβ in Brazil that requires some explanation:
Brazil is not as diverse as it thinks it is - especially compared to Canada. Thereβs a certain fascination with foreigners there, everyone asks dozens of questions. It becomes a bit of a status symbol because it validates the idea that Brazil is good, actually - so much so that some people *choose* to live there.
-
Should citizens of your country that live elsewhere have the right to vote?@evan I personally use βimmigrantβ on purpose since Iβm white-presenting and work in tech. Itβs an attempt to buck the trend of using this word for a particular kind of immigration (the kind some people donβt want).
I emigrated from Brazil because I wanted to and I acknowledge I had the privilege to do it. Many people in my position would call themselves something else.
Again, this is not meant to cause drama or unnecessary discussion, itβs a personal position!

Should citizens of your country that live elsewhere have the right to vote?@evan @renata @mayintoronto For the record, I know. It wasnβt my intention to cause any drama and I enjoy the polls a lot.
-
Should citizens of your country that live elsewhere have the right to vote?@evan Good point!
-
Should citizens of your country that live elsewhere have the right to vote?@evan Iβm a Brazilian immigrant* and not only we can but we have to - vote is mandatory in Brazil. I only need to vote in presidential elections though.
* expat is a problematic word
