And our last question of the week:@ascentale @bikenite A8. I'm going through digital salvage of things I had to leave behind when I moved.
I only went to Burning Man once, but it was early in the days after it had moved from Baker Beach to Black Rock Desert.
Bikes figured in it early on (I think this was 1994). #BikeNite

This is not my cat@rufustheduck Another great advantage of cycle commuting! #BikeTooter

And our last question of the week:@ascentale @bikenite A8. When I was in the smaller town of Pogradec, I saw upright cargo trikes used by city hort workers. Here in Tirana, they seem to be used more by people who make a living picking recyclables & valuables out of public trash bins.
You can see the woven plastic bag which is the shape of the cargo box. These bags can have their edges pulled up very high, extending the capacity of the cargo trike. These are all acoustic trikes...I've never seen one with e-assist. #BikeNite

And our last question of the week:@moira Yes, very exciting. I'd honestly never heard of fossilized dinosaur skin impressions!
-
And our last question of the week:@whack @ascentale @bikenite I love the fog!
Especially in contrast to what that area is like in summer! #BikeNite

@realSiegfried and @MarkBrigham mentioned a question by @Trailanderror@cainmark @ascentale @realSiegfried@troet.cafe @MarkBrigham @Trailanderror @bikenite I like using "cycle" and shifted to it several years ago because we have a big problem in infrastructure & advocacy of only taking upright bikes into account. Some ride less than 2 wheels, some more. And we need paths and elevators and racks, etc that take trikes and quads and handcycles into account.
"Bicycle" & "bike" encode 2 in there.
It hasn't been a totally easy language shift for me, but I'm mostly there #BikeNite

@realSiegfried and @MarkBrigham mentioned a question by @Trailanderror@ascentale @MarkBrigham @Trailanderror @bikenite using the new term as an insult or other target of hatred as those they exercise their bigotry towards keep trying to react to their hate with a name change.

I'm a "cyclist" or "disabled cyclist" depending on how much information I need to convey. I very much object to the reactionary framing that we must break it down to "people riding bikes" in order to make car-centric folks remember our humanity. If they do not acknowledge my humanity, they have bigger problems than a name change is going to address. In fact, we have seen over & over that hegemons will just shift to

Welcome to #BikeNite on Friday, February 6th.@ascentale @bikenite A1. Tirana, Albania.
I am a little closer to having a cycle again, thanks to some generous folks who donated via buying my music! #BikeNite #BikeTooter https://mas.to/@meganL/116028126571949534

It sure would be nice if abled critics of car culture could realize that blanket statements about banning cars and never taking a car are ableist AF.@bike4climate I'm disappointed that in feeling defensive about this, you've told me that the lack of accessibility isn't due to abled cycle advocates but to abled politicians, economists, and traffic engineers. As if the cycling world does not have its own ableism.
That is among the work the cycling community at large has to do - has to realize that ableism exists within cycling and even the ideal designs that cycling orgs submit.
Nothing improves if people are unwilling to admit imperfection.

It sure would be nice if abled critics of car culture could realize that blanket statements about banning cars and never taking a car are ableist AF.@bike4climate As you know, I am also a critic of car culture.
I was subtooting a toot I just saw that is representative of a kind of statement and lack of consideration I have seen repeatedly in my 3 decades of being a disabled cyclist.
So I am not addressing {critics of car culture} in this toot. I am addressing {abled critics of car culture who make blanket statements online that no one should be driving to a gym, showing a gross lack of understanding of disability & accessibility}.
-
It sure would be nice if abled critics of car culture could realize that blanket statements about banning cars and never taking a car are ableist AF.Ableism has made me *less* able to ride a cycle places and has made it more expensive for me when I do. Very very few abled cyclists ever joined me in fighting this.
And I remember that when I see blanket statements about how nobody should be using a car to get to the gym. Because if you're disabled with mobility issues, you can't exercise at all, right?
There are better ways to advocate for deprioritizing car use.

Especially if the person making these statements HASN'T DONE SHIT to join disabled people in lobbying for accessible trains, accessible public transit, and accessible cycles & cycle infrastructure.

h/t to the League of Women Voters of #Pittsburgh@skyfaller Not your state, but when I make these calls I choose to talk to a staffer. I use someone's script to guide me, but I try to speak off-script. It helps me gauge whether the office is actually listening or not and sometimes they're very positive interactions.
Unless the staffer is awful, I try to thank them for their time and for listening to me since positive reinforcement helps. #USpol

We designated today WhatsApp as Very Large Online Platform under the #DigitalServicesAct, as its ‘Channels’ feature reaches the designation threshold of at least 45 million users in the EU.@HennaVirkkunen Is the European Commission exempting itself from the European Accessibility Act?
"Visual quote" is not alt text for this image. For it to be accurate & equitable, it has to have a transcription of the text that sighted ppl are being given in the image, as well as a description of any visual elements that carry meaning that sighted ppl would get out of the image.
It would be good to have the social media team train on equitable and useful social media/web/digital #Accessibility
